Aliran Monthly caught up with Anwar Ibrahim for a frank and in-depth interview on a range of issues. The man has been busy traversing the country, meeting with supporters and trying to forge stronger opposition cooperation for the next general election.
In the first of two parts, we zoom in on the economy, in particular the New Economic Policy. Anwar himself has morphed from an ardent champion of the New Economic Policy to a vocal opponent. We asked him how the transformation took place and why.
And what does he see as an alternative to the policy? Would that alternative bring pain or relief to long-suffering Malaysians in the grassroots who continue to be left out from the mainstream of development? We also ask him about his plans for the coming general election. Read the interview and find out what he has to say.
In voicing support for refugee rights, Amer Hamzah takes to task the Home Affairs Minister. Instead of criticising the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the Minister should appraise himself of Malaysia’s obligations and ensure compliance with human rights norms.
A J Patrick puts the spotlight on the proposed pension scheme for civil servants and finds it a big letdown. Cuepacs, he says must take a firm stand and should not compromise the pension rights of public sector employees. K George, for his part, appeals to the Prime Minister to restore local council elections, which would go a long way in promoting accountability and transparency.
Finally, we pay tribute to an intellectual giant, the late Prof Syed Hussein Alatas, in a series of obituaries by P Ramakrishnan, Wong Kok Keong and Abdul Rahman Embong.
