Man-eating crocs in Sarawak! They have occasionally paralysed villagers with fear. But lurking in the shadows, less visible political and corporate crocodiles have inflicted even more misery, feasting unconscionably as they have on the lives of the poor.

In our cover story, Abang Benet reports on poverty and inequality in a state often viewed in the past as a ‘fixed deposit’ for the BN during elections.

Charles Hector presents the second of a two-part analysis of the state of workers and trade union rights in Malaysia. Under a pro-business BN government, trade unions have been weakened and workers’ bargaining rights have eroded.

Finally, we reproduce Aung San Suu Kyi’s Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech – which she presented 21 years after she was awarded the honour in 1991. This is accompanied by a tribute by Stephen Tan Ban Cheng, who explains why this woman of courage richly deserves the accolade.
