The 1988 judicial crisis began after then Prime Minister Dr Mahathir narrowly defeated Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah by 43 votes in the 1987 Umno presidential election.

Eleven Umno members challenged the result, citing unapproved branches that may have affected the outcome.

High Court Judge Harun Hashim declared Umno an unlawful society, but Supreme Court Lord President Salleh Abas was suspended before the appeal could be heard.
