During Tel Aviv University’s doctorate in medicine award ceremony on Monday, graduating student Dr Yael Harrari used her time on stage to protest Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
After receiving her award, Harrari opened her gown to reveal a white T-shirt reading “Do no genocide”, with the word harm from the Hippocratic Oath crossed out and replaced with genocide.
The message repurposed the medical profession’s ethical commitment to “do no harm” into a call to oppose what rights groups and UN experts have described as Israel’s campaign of genocide in Gaza.
