Trump’s recent visit to East Asia has exposed how vulnerable small and medium-sized nations are when dealing with major powers individually. Asean countries were pressured into accepting harsh trade deals – Malaysia agreed to a 19% tariff whilst granting the US preferential access and committing to massive purchases while Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia faced similar pressures. Asean members must pursue greater regional cooperation rather than bilateral deals if they want to avoid being “picked off one at a time” by superpowers. Asia Sentinel explains what’s at stake.
