Justice for Kampung Papan: Stop forced evictions, free those detained

Aliran calls on the authorities to release detained activists, halt demolitions of occupied homes, and uphold human rights principles in redevelopment efforts

Aliran condemns the arrests of activists and residents from Kampung Jalan Papan, Klang, who were peacefully defending their homes against forced evictions.

We call for their immediate release and demand that all demolitions be halted until residents’ rights are fully respected.

The activists and residents were detained while urging officers and the developers to respect a directive by the Selangor chief minister. That directive, issued on 23 October, clearly stated only vacant houses should be demolished.

Yet, the developers, with police support, continued tearing down occupied homes, evicting families and violating the state government’s own decision.

These actions defy the chief minister’s orders, breach public trust and undermine the rule of law. They also raise serious concerns about why the police were involved in the private developers’ forced evictions.

Aliran joins civil society groups and Suhakam in calling for the immediate suspension of all evictions.

Suhakam has pointed out that the right to adequate housing is a fundamental human right, guaranteed under international law and the Federal Constitution. Forced evictions carried out without due process, consultation or alternative housing violate Malaysia’s human rights obligations.

We urge:

  • The police to release all detainees and investigate the conduct of its Klang Selatan officers
  • The Selangor government to intervene to stop all demolitions and protect occupied homes
  • The developers to engage residents in fair, transparent discussions before any relocation

Development must never come at the expense of people’s dignity and rights.

We stand with the people of Kampung Jalan Papan and all communities seeking justice and humane treatment.
