The recent conviction of Najib Razak – one of the most powerful leaders in Malaysia’s history – is undeniably a significant moment for the nation’s justice system. It is a testament to the principle that no one is above the law.
For too long, we have witnessed a political culture where impunity and privilege shielded the powerful.
Meanwhile, ordinary people bore the brunt of systemic inequality and erosion of trust in public institutions.
The 1MDB saga exposed decades of unchecked power, misallocated public funds and a betrayal of the public’s trust.

Najib’s conviction should not be seen merely as a fleeting victory, but as a wake-up call to society and the country’s institutions.
The judiciary’s role in holding a former prime minister accountable is a milestone – but it must be followed by meaningful, structural reform. This reform must prevent future abuses, strengthen independent oversight and ensure transparency across all branches of government.
However, hope alone is not enough.
We must insist on robust and impartial anti-corruption enforcement, transparency in political financing and public office, independence of key oversight institutions, and equal application of justice for everyone.
If we rest on hope without vigilant, sustained action, this conviction could become just a flash in the pan rather than the foundation of lasting change.
Malaysia’s people deserve more than symbolic justice – they demand a justice system that upholds fairness, accountability and the rule of law consistently and without fear or favour.
Only then can we turn this moment of vindication into a genuine turning point for the nation.
