The arrest of Free Malaysia Today journalist Rex Tan under the Sedition Act is unnecessary and counterproductive.

Such heavy-handed action neither advances the Palestinian cause nor improves public understanding of the complex issues surrounding it.

Tan has acknowledged that he posed an insensitive question at an inappropriate forum. As an attendee at the talk, I witnessed how the speaker, George Galloway, responded. He addressed the question pointedly and eloquently, offering a sharp and well-reasoned explanation that effectively explained the issues raised.

Public forums are held precisely to confront falsehoods, misconceptions and misinformation. As a journalist, Tan asked a question shaped by his own perceptions or biases.

Many may disagree with his position, or even feel offended by the question. However, it is overkill to charge him for having seditious or malicious intentions.

Although the way Tan brought up the issues warranted criticism, one cannot totally dismiss them without serious debate. Indeed, there should be some more appropriate avenues and moments to address them.

Police action in this instance appears disproportionate and beyond what the situation required.

More troubling still is the broader implication: the suppression of open discussion represents a direct assault on freedom of expression.

Misconceptions such as those reflected in the question are, unfortunately, entrenched among sections of Malaysian society. Addressing these misunderstandings through dialogue and education is one of the key challenges facing the Palestinian solidarity movement. Criminalising speech will not resolve this problem.

On the contrary, the clampdown risks doing more harm than good. It undermines democratic space, chills legitimate discourse and ultimately weakens – not strengthens – the Palestinian cause.
