The Association for Welfare, Community and Dialogue condemns the mounting deaths of civilians in Iran due to a crackdown by the Iranian regime and the continuous military threat by the US against that country.

Protests sparked by frustration over record-high inflation, food prices and currency depreciation have quickly evolved into a broader movement demanding an end to the current regime.

The government and civil society should have patiently embarked on a dialogue to resolve the underlying economic issues, instead of threats and violence.

The issues facing Iran are unique and complex and not just about domestic economic matters or human rights.

The country has had to endure decades-old external economic sanctions and the twin threats of military aggression coming from the US and Israel.

Economic sanctions have brought immense economic suffering to the Iranian people, who have had to also put up with geopolitical pressure towards their country.

For well over four decades, the US and its allies have demonised Iran over its independent foreign policy, especially its total support for the Palestinian struggle.

It had gone through collective punishments through maximum sanctions, assassinations of its nuclear scientists and the 12-day war in June 2025 initiated by Israel.

The US and Israel believe that the only axis of resistance to its hegemony is Iran, as Hizbollah has been weakened and the previous Bashar al-Assad regime of Syria is no more.

The fall of the current Iranian government would cement US -Israel pre-eminence and dominance of West Asia.

The diabolical plot of the US and Israel to topple the Iranian government at all costs has brought about the current dire situation. It is not just about the behaviour of the clerical dictatorship there that oppresses its people, as the Western media wants the world to believe.

This is the reason there is legitimate suspicion that Israel and the US are the hidden hands behind the protests that turned out to be unruly.

It is in this context that the threat of the US to take military action against Iran is not only inhuman but goes against decent civilised norms of international relations.

Responsible nations should in fact cease economic sanctions against the country and encourage dialogue in Iran instead of military threats and propaganda.

Therefore, the Association for Welfare, Community and Dialogue would like to urge the US to cease any planned military action in Iran. – Acid
