We, the members of G25, join everyone in celebrating Merdeka Day, commemorating the historic moment when our country embarked on its journey of independence, self-determination and nationhood.
While Merdeka is a time to remember the sacrifices and vision of those who came before us, it is also an opportunity to reflect on what Malaysia has accomplished in the decades since independence.
From a country whose economy was once largely dependent on agriculture and primary commodities, Malaysia has been transformed through sustained investment in education, healthcare, rural development, infrastructure and economic growth.
Our achievements over the past almost seven decades should give us confidence in our ability to progress further.
Malaysia today faces a different set of challenges, from navigating a rapidly changing global economy and technological landscape to addressing inequality, strengthening public institutions, and maintaining social cohesion in an age where social media has transformed how we communicate and engage with one another.

While technology has broken down many barriers and brought people closer together, it can also deepen divisions, spread misinformation and amplify voices that seek to exploit our differences.
However, we also have greater resources, experience and human potential with which to meet these challenges. Our progress has been made possible because of the resilience of ordinary people.
Shaped by different histories, cultures, faiths and traditions, the people have long drawn strength from our diversity, working alongside and enriching one another through the sharing of our different cultures, food, languages and, above all, through humanity, respect and a desire for peace and prosperity.
On this National Day, let us take pride in the distance Malaysia has travelled without becoming complacent about the road ahead. The task before us is not simply to preserve what we have inherited, but to continue to improve it.
We believe Malaysia’s next stage of development must be measured by more than economic progress.
A mature nation is one where institutions command public confidence, power is exercised responsibly, the rule of law is respected, and everyone can participate meaningfully in the country’s future.
Strengthening Parliament and public institutions, improving accountability and governance, and safeguarding our constitutional rights are essential.
In addition, at a time when new technologies and changing patterns of communication shape how we understand events and one another, our future will depend on our willingness to listen across differences, to approach difficult issues with maturity and discernment, and to place the enduring interests of the nation above the divisions of the moment.
With confidence in one another and a shared commitment to the country we hope to build, we can look to our country’s future with optimism and continue to make Malaysia a nation in which every generation can thrive and be proud to call home.
