It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our co-convener, Edlyn Beverly Joeman.
Beverly had been ill for the past three months and eventually succumbed to her illness yesterday in her hometown of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
In Beverly, we have lost a devoted activist and a cherished friend. Her radiant personality brought warmth and vitality to all our gatherings and meetings. Her passion, compassion and perspectives added immense value and depth to our discussions and advocacy.
She made our collective work for human rights and institutional reform richer, stronger and far more meaningful.
Beyond her role at Projek Sama, Beverly served as the project coordinator for the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Children’s Rights and was an executive committee member of Engage.

She had a big heart and was a passionate human rights defender. In addition to her work on children’s rights, she worked closely with grassroots Indigenous peoples’ communities in Malaysia under the umbrella of Jaringan Orang Asal SeMalaysia (JOAS).
She also networked extensively with Indigenous peoples’ NGOs across the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand, representing the JOAS at the UN Forum on Business and Human Rights, the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Geneva, Land Rights Now in Amsterdam, and various Indigenous peoples’ movements in Manila, Jakarta, Da Nang and Bangkok.
Beverly’s former role as vice-chair of the Sabah chapter of the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih) in 2018-23, along with her work at CSO Platform for Reform, earned her deep respect and vast expertise in institutional reform.
She also served as a central committee member of the Kadazan Society Sabah.
Her involvement across such a wide spectrum of causes reflected who she was as a person – someone who cared deeply about justice and human dignity, and who never hesitated to step forward, take a stand and right a wrong.
She will be deeply missed, fondly remembered and forever cherished by the civil society community in Malaysia and beyond.
