Can a political party truly call itself progressive if ordinary people cannot see themselves in its reforms?
TheGoodCastShow responds to a viewer’s defence of Bersama following an interview with Laveen Balaprabhakaran.
While acknowledging the importance of discussing Azam Baki, corruption, institutional independence and Malaysia’s declining Pisa performance, he asks a more fundamental question: what kind of political party does Bersama intend to become?
Institutional reform matters – but it must connect directly to the realities that ordinary people face every day: stagnant wages, insecure employment, unaffordable housing, overcrowded hospitals, struggling schools, rising food prices and household debt.
Being a new party may explain limited resources and organisational reach, but it should not provide immunity from scrutiny. If Bersama claims to represent a different kind of politics, that difference must be demonstrated through its policies, leadership, candidate selection, finances and relationship with ordinary people.

Malaysia does not need another elite political project built around impressive terminology. It needs a movement that listens to people in flats, estates, plantations, fishing villages, small towns and working-class communities – and builds its politics from their lived realities.
Do you believe Malaysia’s political parties are genuinely listening to the people, or are reforms still being discussed mainly among the political and urban elite?
