Karpal Singh was an important part of the history and memory of St Xavier’s Institution, says Br Anthony Rogers.n
It is with deep sorrow that the La Salle Brothers and the thousands of members of the Lasallian Family in Malaysia received this tragic news.
Karpal has been a very important part of the history and memory of St. Xavier’s Institution Penang right from his days of his early education here and he continued to live fearlessly our common Lasallian values and ethos.
We believe that “those who educate many unto justice and goodness shall shine as stars for all eternity”. Our dear Karpal, a friend and faithful collaborator, although missed will continue to be our guiding light in our endeavours to make education in integrity and formation in unity the core of our way forward as Lasallians and Malaysians.

We also take this opportunity to ask God’s blessings on this family, amidst their pain and anguish to change this into a time of grace. Karpal was a grace and gift to us from his family and we will continue to pray that his dreams will stay with us offering all of us hope for the future.
This is our tribute to a great Xavierian and a true Lasallian.
Br. Anthony Rogers fsc is Director of the La Salle Brothers Malaysia. He spent 10 months in detention with Karpal during the Operation Lallang ISA crackdown in 1987-88.
