Gerakan Hapus Akta Hasutan calls on the authorities to look into Ali’s allegation of ill treatment at Sungai Buloh prison and to ensure that his lawyers and family members are given regular access.
Gerakan Hapus Akta Hasutan (GHAH) is appalled that Ali Abd Jalil, who has been charged under the Sedition Act 1948 and currently arrested by IPD Johor Bharu Selatan for a separate investigation under sedition, told his lawyer and family members that he was physically beaten and verbally abused and threatened while being detained in Sungai Buloh prison.
His sister, Asiah Abd Jalil, also revealed this in her Facebook postings after visiting Ali in prison on 19 September 2014.
Ali was denied access to family members for the first 12 days of his detention. Throughout his 15 days of detention in Sungai Buloh, Ali said that he had been verbally and physically abused, i.e. punched, slapped and hit with a baton and rubber pipe in an empty room.
The GHAH, a movement endorsed by 132 civil society organisations, strongly condemns the outrageous treatment of Ali Abd Jalil and calls for an immediate and independent investigation into the allegations of torture and inhumane treatment of Ali Abd Jalil in Sungai Buloh prison. Justice must be done, and the officials involved in such practices must be held accountable if the allegations are well founded.

With Ali Abd Jalil being brought to Johor for detention pending investigation for his fourth sedition charge, we are extremely concerned about his physical and mental well being while in police custody in Johor. Ali’s twin brother, Ahmad Abd Jalil, was imprisoned in Johor in 2012 for allegedly posting remarks on Facebook questioning the Sultan of Johor’s power. During the time, he was blindfolded, held without access to a lawyer and contact to his family for seven days.
We take strong objection to the abuse of the investigation system and the prolonged detention of Ali (by bringing him to different locations and different states for charges which can be consolidated into one). The police, until today, have failed to give a valid explanation as to why he needs to be taken to Johor for alleged seditious comments made on his Facebook page.

On 8 September 2014, Ali was slapped with one count of charge under the Sedition Act 1948 for allegedly criticising the monarchy at the Selayang Sessions Court. After he posted bail of RM5,000 and was set free, he was immediately arrested by police and brought to the Shah Alam Sessions Court for another two counts of charges under the Sedition Act. Ali delayed his bail, which was set at RM8,000 until 23 September 2014, and he was immediately re-arrested again and sent to Johor for several other charges of sedition.

The police seems to have plenty of time in their hands so much so that they could repeatedly arrest the same person and bring him before the courts all over the country multiple times instead of compiling all the cases before charging him altogether in a single venue. And probably many of us can still remember the convoy of balaclava clad policemen sent to arrest Anwar – before even the promised deadline had expired(?) Productivity and resource optimization is definitely not the forte of the PDRM.
He certainly does not look to me like someone who has been tortured. Sedition is Sedition. No matter there be an act or other promulgation of law that makes it an offence or not, Sedition is a serious offence.

Najib did not mention or even gave this piece of news at his UN’s function, how convenient and to make sure of this (his administration) has those arrested for seditions. What a hypocrite he is and no doubt he is … those who sing praises of him. But what he is keeping very quite is the coalition is now bombing the … terrorists in Syria and in Iraq. These … terrorists are worse than the Israelis
while his … group of persecutors … in a different way to all the shiite muslims, the Christians … What a bunch of hypocrites we have here in Putrajaya !
