Gerakan Media Marah (Geramm) mengecam keras tindakan polis dan Suruhanjaya Kommunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia (SKMM) menyerbu pejabat portal berita Malaysiakini dan The Star Online. (English version below.)

English version:

Geramm condemns MCMC raids on Malaysiakini and The Star Online

Gerakan Media Marah (Geramm) condemns in the strongest possible terms the raids conducted by the police and the Malaysian Commission for Multimedia and Communications (MCMC) against news portals Malaysiakini and The Star Online.

We view this as a form of intimidation and an attempt by the powers that be to exert control over the media and its independence.

Geramm strongly protests this action and asks that the authorities respect the right of the media to report without fear or favour and to fulfil its role to inform and educate the public freely.

Indeed actions against investigative authorities and the media over a certain high profile investigation of extreme public interest to date has made the government look more and more like a police state and authoritarian power.

We are sure that this is not the image that authorities want perpetuated, though their actions do nothing but promote this viewpoint.

While Geramm is mindful of the fact that some media reports may be sensationalised and involve facts that are questionable, we again urge the government to use proper recourse like the right of reply in the media and legal means as a last resort.

We urge the powers that be to remember that it was Prime Minister Najib Razak himself who had once promised to uphold media freedom.

Geramm is a loose coalition of journalists, media representatives and activists who are fighting for freedom of the press and its practitioners.
