March 2 Freedom condemns the arrest of Lembah Pantai Parliament Member, Nurul Izzah Anwar.
Uur sister voluntarily appeared at Dang Wangi Police Station today at the allocated time and was prepared to offer full cooperation. She poses no flight risk, is a two-term Member of Parliament and is a respected member of the community. Hence the arrest is nothing short of intimidation and an abuse of power.
She is being investigated under the Sedition Act, but we vehemently reject the charge as the speech that she gave was protected under parliamentary immunity.
We maintain that the arrest of our sister is illegal and unconstitutional. We deplore the glaring selective persecution and the disproportional deployment of resources by the police force when it comes to opposition figures, while being silent at obvious transgressions committed by figures associated with the ruling party.
We also call upon the police to immediately release our sister as well as Adam Adli and Mandeep Singh, who were arrested last Saturday during the #KitaLawan gathering.
