Bersih 2.0: Two questions for candidates in the by-elections

One of them is, will you support both the removal of Prime Minister Najib Razak and the 10 institutional reforms demanded by Bersih 2.0?

Following a tragic helicopter crash two parliamentary seats, namely Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar, fell vacant.

Bersih 2.0 would like to reiterate our sympathy and support for the families and friends who have suffered loss in this tragedy. Whilst we discuss the by-elections, we must never forget that there are those who have lost loved ones and friends.

Bersih 2.0 notes that multi-cornered fights in the constituencies of Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar have become inevitable. In fact, multi-cornered fights may be an unfortunate reality that we may have to face going into the 14th general elections and beyond.

At the same time, Bersih 2.0 is deeply concerned that never in the history of the nation have we been faced with such a scandal-ridden prime minister (Najib Razak), whose many far-reaching decisions appear to now be based more on his survival rather than the interests of the nation. Najib has virtually ruled out all possibilities for truth on the 1MDB scandal to be unearthed and criminals to be brought to justice by a series of his political moves.

We believe that these two by-elections must send a clear message that the extensive abuse of power, the destruction of our institutions and the theft of the rakyat’s money must stop. All Malaysians are now paying a huge price for the RM42bn 1MDB scandal amongst other incidences of corruption, leakages and mismanagement.

In these coming by-elections, as Malaysians, we have two simple questions to ask the Barisan Nasional, Amanah, Pas and independent candidates in each constituency. This will assist voters to decide which candidates best represent their interests and wellbeing. The two questions are as follows:

Question 1

If you become a Member of Parliament, will you support both the removal of Prime Minister Najib Razak and the 10 institutional reforms demanded by Bersih 2.0?

Question 2

If you become a Member of Parliament, will you support reforms to ensure clean and fair elections, including transparent financial accounting by candidates?

To assist the voters, we would ask the candidates to give us their answers within three days through a media statement. We believe that voters need clarity on these issues so that they can make an informed choice. If there is no response, we will assume that the answers to both questions are in the negative.

We thank the candidates for their attention. May the best person win.
