More NGOs from around the country are backing an online petition to protest the massive 4,500-acre “three islands” land reclamation project in Penang.
Among them are fishermen’s groups and those working with the fishing communities in Penang.
More than 4,000 fishermen in Penang are likely to be affected by the land reclamation. Over 6,000 more coastal fisher folk in neighbouring Perak could be affected by sand mining for the land reclamation.
At a packed press conference this morning, chaired by Consumers Association of Penang vice-president Mohideen Abdul Kadir – the first at the office since the passing of the late CAP president SM Mohamed Idris – it was revealed that more than 12,000 people had signed the online petition.
By this evening, the number had soared to over 15,000, leaving a rival petition supporting the project trailing in the dust.

An official logo for the anti-reclamation campaign was also unveiled.
The online petition against the reclamation is available in Malay, English, Chinese and Japanese. A Tamil version is in the pipeline.
