When Umno president Zahid Hamid declared that Umno is parting ways with Perikatan Nasional, the latter shortcircuited Umno’s advancement by appointing Umno’s Ismail Sabri as the Deputy Prime Minister.
When several Umno ministers in Mahiaddin’s cabinet chose to remain despite the Umno supreme council’s insistence that the party would not work with a failed government under Mahiaddin, Umno again lost more ground among its base.
Meanwhile, Ismail Sabri maintained that PN still had steady support. This tore into Umno’s credibility.
So, what locus standi does Umno now enjoy, so late in the day, to even ask for an interim government? None.
It was Anwar Ibrahim who brought Parliament to a standstill by being the first to read out the royal statement of rebuke.

Clearly, Umno has missed its chance of redemption while PKR is capitalising on this crisis.
The age-old party, Umno – whose leaders once screamed their throats dry at every general assembly claiming they would defend race, religion and royalty – has failed miserably and is now limping through a crisis.
By its indecisiveness to grab the bull by the horns and stand out with conviction and solidarity, Umno faces the prospect of being left in the dust of acrimony brought on by PN.
Even if Umno members within Mahiaddin’s camp decide to walk out tomorrow, it is probably too late to patch up the party’s fading credibility.
