The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) has said it will continue to monitor the general election despite being denied accreditation by the Electoral Commission, according to an update on its Facebook page.

Earlier, in a media statement by its chairperson, Razali Ismail, Suhakam said it had been notified by the Electoral Commission that its application to monitor the 2018 general election had been denied, meaning that it would not be allowed inside polling stations during its monitoring.

“Suhakam cannot comprehend this decision especially as we are informed that there will international observers during the election.”

Suhakam added it considers itself a vehicle of integrity and draws it strength from its legislated mandate to protect and promote human rights in Malaysia and will in the public interest proceed with its monitoring plan.

Free and fair elections or its absence is an integral factor of human rights, and Suhakam called on the Electoral Commission to recognise and acknowledge fundamental human rights principles relating to elections with integrity.
