The deputy minister should look into the protection and wellbeing of women and children instead of concerning herself with the dress code of MAS’ female flight attendans, writes WH Cheng.

The Deputy Minister of Women and Family Development Siti Zailah Md Yusoff recently said she would meet up with the minister of religious affairs in the Prime Minister’s Department Zulkifli Mohamad to ascertain if all MAS female cabin crews should cover-up entirely to ensure their “aurat” were not exposed.

To Siti Zailah, how about proposing all MAS female cabin crews to be wrapped up entirely, with masking tapes, shrink wraps whatever you see fit to ensure nothing can be seen forever? What do you think?

Don’t you have more practical things to do in your role and responsibilities as the deputy minister in the women and family development ministry? You should look into matters such as stringent protection of women and children, development of women, children’s wellbeing and all matters to ensure the best for this community. Not going after women who are working in MAS to see if their dress code really adheres to your understanding of religion.

Look at the plight of many women and children who need help or assistance from the government and your ministry especially. Set up women’s or children’s centres or enhance the role of welfare offices nationwide to ensure women and children are being assisted and their wellbeing is being looked into.

Take an in-depth look at rural areas where women and children are very much in need of help and care and lack such facilities – which will certainly harm their wellbeing.

Siti Zailah, you are running out of focus in your first week as a deputy minister in that ministry. Stay on course and do not use religion to justify your job or comprome your role and responsibilities. Be practical in what you are doing.

The subject of air hostess uniform does not require THINKING, whereas WELFARE of women requires a lot of THINKING. For products of our broken education system which has been speaking a lot about HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills), but has really doing nothing to develop HOTS in the schools since the system itself lacks HOTS, talking about the hostess uniforms is about the best the Minister can “think” about!
