CSO Platform for Reform strongly condemns the arrest of Suaram executive director Sevan Doraisamy for advocating detainee rights under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).
While Sevan has been released, we remain deeply concerned that Azura Nasron, Suaram’s programme manager, is still required to give a statement on this matter.
The unwarranted arrest showed that we are still stuck in the old system of intimidation of human rights defenders to suppress dissenting voices from making headlines.
The continued intimidation of civil society is a stark contradiction to the institutional reform the “unity government” preaches to the public.
CSO Platform for Reform stands in solidarity with Suaram and all those advocating for human rights in Malaysia. We urge the government to uphold democratic values and respect civil society’s role in contributing to institutional reforms. – CSO Platform
