Hakam, while applauding the Ministry of Home Affairs’ formation of a special taskforce to investigate Suhakam’s report/finding on the enforced disappearances of Raymond Koh and Amri Che Mat, notes with grave concern the unbalanced composition of the taskforce.
In particular, we note that:
there is no representatives from civil society organisations or the Bar Council;
there should be racial, religious and gender balance to assuage public perception of bias;
persons associated with the police force are over-represented; and
we are particularly disturbed by the appointment of a police personnel who also participated actively on behalf of the police in the Suhakam inquiry.
Hakam calls upon the government to reconstitute the special taskforce on an urgent basis to achieve a balanced, fair and proportionate representation. This is the very least that should be done to accord justice to the families of Raymond Koh and Amri Che Mat.
Hakam is willing to assist the government to recommend suitable candidates for consideration.
