Hakam notes that Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Liew Vui Keong are making efforts to save Pannir Selvam Pranthaman from the death penalty for drug trafficking in Singapore.

Pannir is scheduled to be hanged on Friday, 24 May 2019.

Hakam supports the Malaysian government’s efforts, which are consistent with Pakatan Harapan’s promise to abolish the mandatory death penalty.

Hakam reiterates its stance that the death penalty violates the right to life, which is the most basic of all human rights. It also violates the right not to be subjected to torture and other cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment or punishment.

Furthermore, the death penalty undermines human dignity which is inherent to every human being.

The death penalty is, by its nature, ultimate, irreversible and unduly harsh. It offers no room for rehabilitation or remorse.

Further, it has been shown in many other jurisdictions that the judicial process involved in death row cases is prone to human error.

Hakam hopes that Singaporean authorities will consider the Malaysian government’s plea for mercy.

Lim Wei Jiet is secretary-general of Hakam.
