Pusat Komas expresses deep concern and disappointment over the recent police investigation into Teresa Kok, the DAP vice-chairperson, following her remarks on halal certification.
While we acknowledge the sensitivities surrounding religious matters in Malaysia, we are deeply troubled by the disproportionate response to Kok’s comments compared to the inflammatory and racist remarks made by Dr Akmal Saleh, the head of Umno’s youth wing.
Kok’s statements, while critical of the proposed mandatory halal certification, were rooted in concerns about potential economic burden on businesses and the preservation of Malaysia’s cultural diversity.
Her views were expressed in a reasoned and respectful manner, and she at no point incited hatred or violence against any religious group.
In stark contrast, Akmal’s response was laden with racist and sexist undertones. He referred to Kok as a “nyonya tua”, a derogatory term for older Chinese women, and suggested that a “non-halal” logo be stamped on her forehead.

Such remarks are not only deeply offensive but also create a climate of hostility and intolerance towards minority communities.
Pusat Komas questions the double standard at play here. Why is Kok being investigated for expressing her views, while Akmal remains free to spout racist and discriminatory remarks?
This selective enforcement of the law raises serious concerns about the protection of freedom of expression in Malaysia, particularly for those who dare to question policies or practices that may have religious implications.
Legitimate criticism of any proposed policy, done in moderation and in a proper manner, should be the hallmark of a vibrant democracy.
We believe Teresa Kok, as an MP and citizen, did just that and should never be subject to abusive tirades by politicians and their followers.
We urge the authorities to drop the investigation into Kok and instead focus their attention on addressing the hate speech and incitement to violence perpetrated by Akmal.
It is imperative that all, regardless of their ethnicity or religion, feel safe to express their views without fear of persecution or discrimination.
Pusat Komas remains committed to fighting against all forms of racism and discrimination in Malaysia.
We will continue to advocate for a society where all individuals are treated with dignity and respect, and where freedom of expression is upheld for all. – Komas
