Engage is pleased to announce that we are partnering with Caremongering Penang, a group of Penangites who banded together to fight the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, with the launch of the MakanKongsi food voucher programme for vulnerable communities during the movement control order period.

In Penang, we aim to serve at least 100 clients with two meals a day for 14 days at a cost of RM4 per meal, at a total budget of RM11,200, or RM112 per person. If the movement control order is extended, we will continue the programme until the restrictions are lifted.

MakanKongsi is a programme to ensure that those who earns daily wages but are now unable to work due to the movement control order can have at least two meals a day for two weeks.

MakanKongsi aims to achieve this, while complying with the order, by issuing food vouchers (that are redeemable from participating restaurants) to those in need. This is to minimise the need for crowds to gather during meal times. Food will be on takeaway basis from nearby restaurants to minimise movement and the need for daily contact with volunteers.

For families who have their own cooking facilities but are in need of assistance, we will also provide the same allocation so that they can buy provisions to cook their meals, without the need for food vouchers.

Engage was founded in 2013 by Thomas Fann, the current chairperson of Bersih 2.0, while the current chair of Engage is Prof Wong Chin Huat, a veteran social activist and political scientist with Sunway University. We will ensure transparency and accountability in our handling of funds donated by the public.

MakanKongsi was launched in Johor Bahru on 20 March 2020 with a target of 120 clients in the city centre; we appealed for RM13,440 but the public response has been overwhelming and to date we have raised RM64,54. With the additional funds, we are now looking to serve 340 clients covering the JB city centre, Sri Stulang Iskandar, Kempas, Larkin and Kulai low-cost flats areas.

We will also be working with Persatuan Wanita Selangor to serve another cluster of around 35 clients in Kajang.

Our heartfelt thanks to all who donated, you are making a huge difference to the hundreds of lives during this crisis.

Engage calls on the public to support the MakanKongsi programme by donating money so that we can reimburse participating restaurants the cost of the meals.

We pledge that all money donated will be used for the meals and none will be used to cover administrative or logistical costs. We are fully run by volunteers and no salaries or allowances are paid. Any incidental expenses will be covered by the existing funds we have.

You may donate to MakanKongsi through our technology partner Sedunia.my. Sedunia has waived their service fees during this COVID-19 period but there is still 2% charge by the payment gateway enabler. The details are can be found here.
