Anyone, irrespective of their status and civil service ranking, found intentionally or negligently not carrying out the directives of the new government should face disciplinary action, writes Mohamed Arshad Raji.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Chinese New Year message calling for Malaysians to celebrate diversity and not allow divisive elements to disrupt the peace and harmony is lauded.

We are a multi-racial and multi-religious nation and have learnt to live together since independence. At the age of 93 and leading the nation for the second time, Mahathir is undoubtedly the right person to make such a call.

Mahathir’s New Year message is timely as we read on a daily basis numerous messages, especially on social media, that are ill intended, aimed at causing discontentment, hatred and confusion among the uninformed populace against the new government.

These presumably are the work of people paid by certain quarters for their self-serving interest. There may also be some quarters who have been frustrated with the change of government and are deprived of opportunities and benefits they enjoyed under the previous government.

Patriot takes a serious view of such divisive messages and calls upon the government to enforce greater scrutiny of the originators of such messages. Such divisiveness cannot be allowed to fester unabated when the government is doing its best to amend the wrongdoings of the previous government, especially in the financial and economic mismanagement of the state.

The numerous charges against the nation’s former leaders for corruption, money laundering and abuse of power reflect the unworthiness of their leadership and a betrayal of the solemn oath of office they made to the King and Parliament.

There have also been criticisms of the government for what is seen as inaction by certain ministers and ministry officials on issues of national interest. It is public knowledge that there are ministry and department officials who are still supportive of the previous government, and their activities and actions run counter to the policies of the ruling government. So far two cabinet ministers, education and agriculture, have spoken up and expressed their frustrations at having to deal with civil servants dragging their feet.

Little Napoleons do exist among the civil servants in the various ministries as well as in local governments. Anyone, irrespective of their status and civil service ranking, found intentionally or negligently not carrying out the directives of the new government should face disciplinary action.

Our new government has so much to do to put things right. As such, all civil servants should adopt a no-nonsense work attitude.

Remove the red tapes that make firing of non-performing civil servants so difficult.
