The Malaysian Bar welcomes Idrus Harun on his appointment as the new attorney general of Malaysia.

Idrus comes from a long history of national legal service, formerly as the solicitor general, and then onto his elevation to the Court of Appeal on 12 September 2014, and eventually to the Federal Court on 26 November 2018.

With his wide experience and exposure, the Bar believes that Idrus will uphold the rule of law and the cause of justice without fear or favour.

The Malaysian Bar also takes this opportunity to thank the former attorney general, Tommy Thomas, with whom we have had a cordial and productive relationship with since he took office in June 2018. During his tenure, we had been able to work through several issues that are dear to the Bar, in both his capacities as legal adviser and public prosecutor.

These include, among others, the settling of outstanding payments due from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK) to those who had provided services to YBGK as well as the efforts by him and his team at the Attorney General’s Chambers, in spearheading the Malaysian Bar’s endeavour in revamping our Legal Profession Act 1976, which was set to be tabled in a new bill in the upcoming sitting of Parliament.

The Malaysian Bar hopes that this continued synergy will continue into the new season.

The Malaysian Bar looks forward to working through these matters and more, alongside the Attorney General’s Chambers, as equal partners in the administration of justice, as we serve the profession and our nation.
