Media are not agents for ‘cheap publicity’

Follow us on our Malay and English WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, Tiktok and Youtube channels.

The waiting game has always been part and parcel of life as a media practitioner, even more so during times of uncertainty and frequent news developments.

Since early this week, #kawangeramm has seen their fair share of camping out near various locations of interest, including outside the gates of Istana Negara, Kuala Lumpur.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong himself even surprised members of the media stationed at the palace gates, by treating them to some fast food packs.

Gerakan Media Merdeka (Geramm) deeply appreciates the support shown by various quarters during this period.

However, it is our stern view that the media should not be made to be agents for what could be deemed as ‘cheap publicity’ acts by any party.

Geramm would also like to condemn the actions of a local YouTube personality who has tried to gain instant popularity by carrying out a ‘RM10,000 challenge’. It is understood that the individual(s) attempted to distribute RM1 notes to the media gathered outside Istana Negara and record the act, before ultimately being reprimanded by police.

We at Geramm view the action as an indirect insult to journalism as a whole.

Globally, several leading and reputable news agencies practise the prohibition of accepting gifts exceeding a certain value. This is so to ensure that media freedom is maintained and protected from any form of commercial elements.

Geramm believes that similar practices are being adopted by our local media agencies, whether at the organisational level or simply based on the personal awareness of each media practitioner.

To all #kawangeramm, stay strong and may our solidarity be further strengthened.
