These be zero tolerance for all forms of discrimination and any action which further causes cracks in our country’s fabric of diversity, says Sisters in Islam.
We refer to Mujahid Yusof Rawa’s order for the removal of portraits of LGBT activists from the George Town Festival’s Stripes and Strokes exhibition.
It is upsetting that the minister chose to erase the visibility of some of the most silenced and suppressed Malaysians, especially given that the exhibition itself revolved around the Malaysian flag as a unifying factor for Malaysians of different background and walks of life.
Sisters in Islam believes that Mujahid should focus on policies that will eliminate discrimination in the larger scheme of things, instead of actions that would cause further bigotry among our country’s minority communities.
In light of Malaysia baharu, the minister’s priorities should be on unity and celebration of inclusivity. This must begin with zero tolerance for all forms of discrimination and any action which further causes cracks in our country’s fabric of diversity.
AGENDA RAKYAT - Lima perkara utama
- Tegakkan maruah serta kualiti kehidupan rakyat
- Galakkan pembangunan saksama, lestari serta tangani krisis alam sekitar
- Raikan kerencaman dan keterangkuman
- Selamatkan demokrasi dan angkatkan keluhuran undang-undang
- Lawan rasuah dan kronisme
Showing discrimination against LGBT is not a crime. LGBT relationship is.
Different exposure, different thinking, different understanding and tolerance.
In short, ignorance and bigotry.
The fact of the matter is, no matter what policy is put in place, there will always be those that would object and be dissatisfied.
Minister being a unifying force is wonderful idea, yes. but how that idea can be carried out when the reality is people would remain divided on all issues?
