Engage and our partner Friends & Strangers are overwhelmed by the generosity shown by the public to our appeal for funds to run the MakanKongsi food voucher for the vulnerable people in our community during this movement control order period.
Recently we sent out our appeal via WhatsApp and Facebook for RM13,440, the total cost to provide two meals a day for 14 days to the homeless and daily wage earners who are without income to buy food and other essentials. In less than 24 hours, we received RM36,027 in the account for MakanKongsi.
With the extra money we are now expanding our assistance from the original 120 clients in the Johor Bahru city centre to another 70 clients at the Sri Stulang low-cost people’s housing project, making a total of 190 clients. We are looking at reaching out to another 130 clients in the Larkin flats area and in Kulai. All this would not have been possible without your support.
MakanKongsi produces food vouchers that can be redeemed for meals on a takeaway basis at participating restaurants or food collection points. Wity the money received, we will reimburse restaurants based on vouchers they received back from clients.

These restaurants are near to where our clients are located to minimise movement during the movement control order. And having different restaurants/collection points also spreads out the need to gather as a crowd in one place for their meals. The main goal is to ensure that these vulnerable people get at least two meals a day at no cost to them and have their meals safely.
It is our earnest hope that citizen groups all over the country can reach out to their neighbours and strangers who are vulnerable due to the loss of income during this period as we fight the coronavirus pandemic. If the MakanKongsi initiative is something they can replicate, we would be most delighted.
We want to thank all our donors and supporters who have enabled us to reach out to each other, especially the vulnerable among us. We have more than enough funds for now but should the movement control order be extended, we will continue the MakanKongsi programme. We will keep you posted.
