Penang Hills Watch (PHW) is concerned by the forest fire incident which happened on the slopes of Carla’s Peak, close to Solok Tanjung Bungah 4 February 2021.

Three separate fires were spotted, close to each other. The fires destroyed an estimated seven hectares of forest and the incident created much alarm among the residents in the area as seen by the multiple reports received by Penang Hills Watch.

While the actual reason for the fires is yet to be determined, the nature of this incident – three separate sites in close proximity were simultaneously ablaze – raises suspicion as to whether this incident could have been a deliberate action to destroy the forest.

We appeal to the state and government agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the root cause of these fires and, if found to be due to deliberate actions, to immediately take action against the culprits and to take steps to prevent such actions from recurring. – PHW
