Gerakan Media Merdeka (Geramm) telah menerima beberapa laporan berkaitan isu pelantikan ketua pengarang kumpulan New Straits Times.

– Geramm

English version

Gerakan Media Merdeka (Geramm) has received several reports that concern the removal and appointment of the English daily New Straits Times group editor.

The reports raise concerns over political interference in the news desk, a serious matter that needs to be looked into much further by all parties, particularly as the country gears up for an impending general election.

In a healthy democracy, the role of the media is to serve as an agent of checks and balances – a force often feared by those in power.

We were also informed that NST staff are currently trying to have a dialogue with the company’s stakeholders on the matter following a petition that has been signed by those concerned about the publication.

As such, Geramm calls for adequate space to be given by the management for all views raised on this matter, which affects not only the newsroom and its staff but also Malaysia’s overall press freedom landscape.

We stand in solidarity with every single media worker who continually fights for press freedom.

We also call upon all parties to support the effort of press workers in maintaining the independence of the newsroom. – Geramm
