BDS Malaysia notes that some of the participants who joined the protest march which ended at KLCC were denied entry into the Suria KLCC shopping mall.

Some were just wearing keffiyehs or Palestinian scarves. A lady who walked in holding a Palestinian flag was accosted by some security guards who tried to snatch her flag. Tian Chua who tried to intervene was manhandled by the security guards.

BDS Malaysia is very disappointed with the reaction of the KLCC staff towards the protest participants and the ill-conceived statement issued by the Suria KLCC management attempting to justify its staff’s action by saying that it was the long wooden stick to which a Palestinian flag was attached that was the main issue. This is because other prospective patrons of the mall who wore Palestinian keffiyeh and carried pro-Palestinian posters were also not allowed to enter.

Treating protesters in support of the cause of justice in Palestine and against the genocide in Gaza as potential security threats or trouble-makers is understandable in pro-Zionist countries. But that should never happen in Malaysia, a country that has consistently expressed strong support for the cause of freedom and justice for Palestinians.

The actions of the Suria KLCC security staff are nothing short of disgraceful and have tarnished the global image of the Malaysian government as one that is firmly on the side of Palestine.

We call upon the Suria KLCC management to:

  • apologise to the people who were treated very unjustly and badly by their security guards, especially to Tian Chua, an ex-member of the Malaysian Parliament and vocal supporter of the Palestine cause
  • clarify once and for all its policy on visitors who have on their person paraphernalia which carry pro-Palestine messages
