Aliran today launched an online petition calling on Attorney General Idrus Harun to review the decision granting Riza Aziz a discharge not amounting to acquittal.
The petition also calls for a Royal Commission of Inquiry to probe the mysterious circumstances of this case, especially as it could set a precedent for other similar high-profile public interest cases.
Granting a discharge without compelling grounds sends a wrong signal to suspects in other high-profile cases involving public funds that “crime pays” and they can get away with a mere slap on the wrist, said the petition.
It calls for a stop to similar decisions in relation to other high-profile public interest cases, so that those who are charged with money laundering and misappropriation of public funds are not rewarded and have to continue with their court cases.
The petition also appeals to the legal fraternity to look at ways to correct this evident injustice in the eyes of the people and plug any loopholes in the system that allow suspects to escape scrutiny and due process in open court, especially in public interest cases. Sign the petition.
