The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) aims to provide accurate information and clarify its position regarding the recent withdrawal of a defamation suit filed by the chairman of Suhakam against a senior officer within the commission.

Suhakam recognises the importance of addressing concerns promptly and upholding the highest standards of integrity within the institution.

In response to the allegations brought to light through the media, it has been revealed that the chairman has decided to withdraw the private defamation suit against the senior officer. The decision to withdraw the suit was made to enable an independent and impartial internal investigation into the allegations.

Suhakam acknowledges the need to create an environment where individuals feel safe and encouraged to come forward with their concerns, free from fear of retaliation.

While Suhakam acknowledges its limited authority in investigating complaints against its own commissioners, the commission remains fully committed to treating all complaints and allegations seriously, regardless of whether they involve members of the commission or Suhakam staff.

In this particular case, the internal investigation will be carried out by an independent body, ensuring a meticulous, impartial and fair process in accordance with best practices.

Suhakam reiterates its unwavering commitment to safeguarding human rights, combating discrimination and promoting inclusivity and equality. The commission will continue its diligent efforts to uphold its role as a trusted and impartial authority in the protection and advancement of human rights in Malaysia. – Suhakam
