Tribute to the late T Rajamoorthy

He stood by us throughout our struggle

In 1976 workers from a steel pipe manufacturing company along Chain Ferry Road in Butterworth were forced to resort to industrial action on account of their employers anti-union attitude.

I was one of those involved. What started as a protest escalated to a six-month strike during which we camped out the entire period. During those challenging times we were two individuals were Godsent – Mohideen Abdul Kader (now president of the Consumers Association Of Penang) and T Rajamoorty, both lawyer-activists from the then Party Socialist Rakyat Malaysia.

They were the ones who stood by us throughout our struggle. They were our family!

Sadly, Saudara Rajamoorty passed away on 24 March, just short of 80 years of age.

On behalf of my comrades in that 1976 industrial action, I convey and heartfelt and deepest condolences to the family of our beloved Saudara T Rajamoorty. We are eternally indebted to him for his unwavering commitment to our struggle.

Rest in peace, saudara, as you will be placed amongst the righteous in the abode of the Creator.

K. Veeriah, to my mind, lawyer T. Rajamoorthy was a very private public intellectual
with a caring heart for the welfare of his fellow human beings.

I met the man several times – alas, far too few – over the years from the late 1960s.

“Raja” always comes across with succinct observations born out of his caring heart.
Despite his caring heart, he was not spared “the sufferings of the slings and arrows
of outrageous fortune.”

True to his feelings, he did not take up arms against a sea of troubles” but directed
his energies to make the world a better place for his fellow human beings.

May I be allowed to commend this good man to a better place that our God has
reserved for such deserving souls.
