The Association for Community and Dialogue is concerned that the worldwide Covid-19 death toll has surpassed 200,000.

But there seems to be inertia among international organisations such as the UN bodies to seriously investigate and analyse the catastrophic pandemic, which has cause not only deaths but has also ravaged the global economy, pushing people towards unemployment and misery.

The world is going through a devastating war-like situation with an invisible enemy, and this warrants a global investigation.

The pandemic has taught us the critical importance of seriously looking into global economic greed and the lack of care for the ecosystem – which has made the coronavirus easily transmittable from animals to humans.

But we must also understand why China, the US and many other parts of world have been negligent in their management of this pandemic. This has caused the coronavirus to spread exponentially causing death and suffering to the global population.

There have been accusations and counter-accusations between the US and China on the cause of the coronavirus and transparency in dealing with it besides the role of the World Health Organization (WHO). The world needs to know the entire truth about these accusations.

Global citizens have the right to know the exact cause of this viral pandemic, why it took so long to detect the virus, and why countries with high causalities have been slow in curbing the spread of the virus.

Has global healthcare monitoring been slow in detecting the coronavirus? Why have been no lessons learned from the outbreak of Sars in 2002-03? Has there been any form of biological warfare?

Is there weakness in the current global healthcare systems in relation to pandemics, which are not able to cater to vulnerable citizens, as seen in the United States?

As part of the community of global citizens, the Association for Community and Dialogue would like the UN to set up an international truth commission to investigate these concerns.

The findings could also help in strengthening the Biological Weapons Convention, so that state and non-state actors can be prevented from learning from the spread of coronavirus to launch biological warfare in the future.
