The Tanjung Bungah proposal shows that nature-based solutions beat hard engineering every time

RESIDENT-LED CONCEPTUAL PROPOSAL: TANJUNG BUNGAH COASTAL PARK

We write in strong support of the residents-led conceptual proposal for the long overdue Tanjung Bungah coastal park at the site infamously dubbed the “Sore Thumb”.

The residents have raised legitimate concerns about the potential loss of public beach access and destruction of coastal habitat supporting protected wildlife species. They are also concerned that hard engineering solutions could accelerate coastal erosion.

Their thoughtful 78-page proposal demonstrates commitment to preserving this publicly accessible coastline. This would preserve the ecosystem that supports white-bellied sea eagles, otters and dusky leaf monkeys – all protected under Malaysia’s Wildlife Conservation Act 2010.

The proposal offers a low-impact alternative that works with the natural landform. It prioritises vegetation-based slope stabilisation, native coastal planting and phased implementation. It also demonstrates how public access, safety and environmental protection can be achieved concurrently.

The emphasis on lightweight timber structures, educational elements and protected wildlife zones reflects international best practice in climate-responsive coastal park design. All this, while remaining cost-effective and aligned with the aspiration to preserve Penang’s ecosystems.

We urge the Penang government to seriously consider this community-led proposal that would safeguard both the public interest and environmental resilience along Penang Island’s sensitive northern coastline.
