SPR sentiasa berkhidmat untuk Umno-BN: Bersih 2.0

Ismail Sabri is under intense pressure

Bersih 2.0 melihat bahawa tuduhan Ahli Majlis Tertinggi Umno Ismail Sabri Yaakob ke atas bekas Perdana Menteri Dr Mahathir Mohamad bahawa perbuatan gerrymandering kawasan pilihanraya semalam sebagai bukti bahawa Suruhanjaya Pilihan Raya (SPR) adalah “alat” parti itu semata. (English version below)

Election Commission has always served Umno-BN

The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0) sees Umno Supreme Council member Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s gerrymandering accusation against former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday as proof that the Election Commission (EC) is a “lackey” of the party.

Yesterday, Ismail, who is also the agriculture and agro‑based industry minister, accused Mahathir of undermining Malay constituencies by making them mixed constituencies during the premier’s 22-year rule from 1981 to 2003.

Bersih 2.0, however, is not in anyway surprised by the revelation as there has always been an Umno-BN policy of using government agencies to continue their undemocratic rule.

Furthermore, the reply of EC Chairman Abdul Aziz Yusuf today that Malay-majority seats are now mixed seats as alleged by Ismail Sabri was not done through gerrymandering is also confusing.

This is not the first time Abdul Aziz and the EC have flip-flopped on issues like this. The EC will never take responsibility for any mistakes they have made. Until now, the issue of the indelible ink used in GE13 still hasn’t been answered nor has the EC been investigated over the ink’s failure.

Abdul Aziz’s weak and lame reply that it was done by voters changing their constituencies, which is out of the EC’s hands shows that the EC has never and will never be independent as long as Umno is in charge.

This development might mean that gerrymandering will again be a tactic used in the current delineation exercise to pre-determine the outcome of the 14th general election as Umno and other major BN affiliates are embroiled in crises at a time when public support for the Prime Minister and Umno president are at an all-time low.

Bersih 2.0 vows not to let this happen and will continue its campaign to educate all voters and Malaysian citizens about their rights. If the EC insists on attempting to subvert the Constitution, they must be prepared to defend their actions in court.
