Bolivia’s free health care lesson for Malaysia

While Karol Consulting looks into the mechanics of a proposed national health care financing scheme that might burden Malaysians even more, Bolivia is going ahead with plans for a single free health care system.

Right now, the Malaysian government spends just about 2 per cent of GDP on our public health care system, well short of World Health Organisation recommendations. Imagine the kind of improvements we could see in our general hospitals and our public health care system if that were to increase to 4-5 per cent. There would be no need to hire a foreign consultant and further burden Malaysians, would there? We could focus a lot more on preventive care and a more holistic understanding of good health and healing.

Bolivia for Single, Free Health Care

Sucre, Bolivia, Oct 21 (Prensa Latina) The Bolivian government pledged its commitment to a single and free health system in which all citizens have the same rights, according to a proposal presented to the Constituent Assembly on Saturday.

Minister of Health Nila Heredia said the strategy will be discussed by 255 Assembly members at the plenary in the southern city of Sucre next week.

The Executive project aims to protect the rights of the Bolivian people to health and life, and it was previously analyzed by thousands of social and civic organizations.

The text reads that medical assistance and health is a vital right linked to the life and development of all inhabitants of the Andean nation, with no discrimination.

It also refers to the duty of the State in guaranteeing the access to those services of the health system through public policies.
