We, Gabungan Bertindak Malaysia (GBM), a coalition of 29 NGO members, are surprised and appalled by the unacceptable action of a man who allegedly slapped a non-Muslim at Johor Bahru for eating in public during the fasting month.
We agree with the sentiment expressed by National Unity Minister Aaron Ago Dagang, that it was an act of provocation that went against the spirit of unity and harmony in Malaysia’s multicultural society.
We also concur with the minister responsible for Islamic affairs minister, Na’im Mokhtar, who said the incident does not reflect the true teachings of Islam and urged Muslims to show patience and to respect others.
No one should further provoke or retaliate, as violence always begets violence. We urge the public, particularly politicians and influencers, not to exploit the issue to provoke religious and racial sentiments.
We must prevent anger from escalating, which will only set society on a cycle of hatred and revenge. As the victim has made a police report, we should let the due process of the law run its course and the perpetrator be brought to justice. We hope the authorities will uphold the rule of law and due process.

The holy month of Ramadan should be a time to promote the values of patience and mutual understanding in our multicultural society.
Unfortunately, in past years, the month has also become a month of controversy due to various incidents and misunderstanding.
In light of the month of Shawwal, less than two weeks from now, let us embrace the spirit of tolerance and mutual understanding wholeheartedly, with a determination to make diversity our biggest asset.
Let us remember we humans are made different so that we may know each other.
Let us similarly appreciate that Malaysia is made and sustained by very diverse populations and love each other.
Let us build a better Malaysia!
