Support our local businesses

Gabungan Bertindak Malaysia (GBM) urges the Malaysian public to support our small businesses, especially those dealing with local products and services during this period of acute economic crisis in the nation.

It is clear that these businesses such as coffee shops, kopitiams, sundry shops, food stalls, local markets and similar establishments are among the hardest hit by the movement control order enforcement. Many have suffered losses which will make it difficult, if not impossible, for them to survive even after the movement control order is lifted.

Such businesses have been largely left out of the various stimulus packages implemented by the government to date.

To ensure their survival, we, concerned NGOs that represent multiracial communities from all over Malaysia, call on fellow Malaysians to undertake the following consumer actions in out post-movement control order life:

  • Buy local produce as much as possible. This will also stimulate our domestic vegetable, fruit, meat and fish sectors and small businesses
  • Patronise local neighborhood stores, small shops and markets when they are reopened
  • Minimise spending on international food and drink franchises which have higher prices for example, coffee or pastries and cakes. These enterprises have deeper reserves and can survive in difficult times better than our small businesses

Remember, if we help to keep our small businesses strong, we will make our economy stronger.

We also urge the government to launch a campaign to buy local products to support small businesses and stimulate domestic demand for these products.

Even during normal times, I have always supported the small businesses. Only when I cannot something in the small retail shops, I go to the Supermarket.
