Gabungan Bertindak Malaysia (GBM) wishes to extend its condolences to the family of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim.

The news of his untimely death comes as a moment of sadness and grief for us and, we believe, for the nation as well. We pray and hope that his family and loves ones will have the strength and courage to journey through these difficult moments and find much-needed solace in God Almighty. The Quran has these words of encouragement’: “And do not say about those who are killed in the way of Allah, “They are dead.” Rather, they are alive, but you perceive (it) not” (2:154).

As the nation grieves over the death of the late Muhammad Adib, we are mindful that justice for him and his family must be served. We note that the police have now reclassified his case to murder to be investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code. We urge the police to complete the investigation as quickly as possible while leaving no stone unturned to get to the bottom of the temple riots that have caused immeasurable damage to property and now claiming a life. The perpetrators and murderer(s) must be brought to justice and face the consequences of such heinous crimes.

While the police conduct their investigation, we urge all citizens of the nation to respect and allow the due process of law to take its course. It is unhelpful at this juncture to speculate on who the culprits are; whether they are mere criminals or terrorists. It is also irresponsible to conflate the perpetrators with a particular ethnic group. We call on all quarters to refrain from manipulating the tragic incident into a racial conflict. As sensible citizens, let us refrain from pointing fingers at anyone and allow the police investigation to be completed first.

For now, due respect and honour should be given to the late Muhammad Adib as a firefighter who was called to respond to an emergency and faithfully discharged his duties.

All people of Malaysia regardless of ethnicity and religious affiliations must now come together and rally behind the bereaved family and offer our prayers and practical support for them. May his soul be placed among the righteous!
