About 150, including Aliran members, attended a vigil in solidarity with detained Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah outside the police contingent headquarters in George Town last night.
Several hundred more attended another vigil at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur last night. Among those gathered there were Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Siti Hasmah.
Maria Chin is being held without trial, in solitary confinement, under the draconian security law, Sosma.
An online petition calling for Maria to be released that has been circulating online has already gathered 35,000 signatures with over 16,000 protest comments in only a couple of days. It is not clear who initiated the petition.
This morning, about 40 MPs marched from Parliament to Bukit Aman while chanting slogans calling for Maria’s release.
