To mark World Human Rights Day and the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Aliran has released a special music video of a song called Kebebasan or Freedom.

This rousing rendition features veteran Aliran member and political scientist Johan Saravanamuttu, who composed the song in the aftermath of Operation Lalang in 1988, performing together with Azmyl Yunor (harmonica) and Adil Johan (on sax).

They wowed a capacity crowd at the Aliran fundraising dinner at the Majestic Theatre in Penang on 8 September 2018.

Translation of lyrics

Kebebasan (Freedom)

Freedom, Freedom
So easy to lose it
Freedom, Freedom
So difficult to defend

Laws are used to abuse us
Freedom is chained
We are like cattle
Silenced and controlled

Freedom, Freedom
So easy to lose it
Freedom, Freedom
So difficult to defend

If we want to be free
from the throttling grip
Don’t be like cattle
Uphold your humanity

Freedom, Freedom
So easy to lose it
So difficult to defend

Freedom, Freedom, Freedom….
