Today, veteran journalist MGG Pillai is laid to rest. We mourn the passing of this most colourful of characters who regularly fired broadsides against politicians and tycoons indulging in irregularities – a scourge to the powers-that-be if ever there was one.
His voracious output of articles was perhaps only matched by his hearty appetite for good food. He was one of those rare writers who could write on subjects – and make cutting allegations against powerful politicians, judges and tycoons whenever they stepped out of line – that most other journalists would not touch with a barge-pole.
Amazingly, he lived to tell the tale and even won grudging respect from the politicians themselves even if he remained a persona non grata in the mainstream media.
Full of anecdotes, he always had a colourful story to tell, the latest nugget of political news to relate – and he just loved an audience.
Malaysian journalism has lost a legendary figure. We only hope that other journalists will be inspired by his courage and take up the baton he has handed over in the struggle for independent journalism in Malaysia
