Aliran views with concern – and indeed condemns – the latest, quite despicable, attempts by the regime to silence discussion surrounding the 1MDB debacle.
More specifically, this can be seen in its current pathetic attempts at discrediting individuals and organisations who have brought out into the open allegations of wrongdoing by people in power – attempts which are a waste of public funds and an insult to the intelligence of concerned Malaysians.
Individuals who should be considered patriots and loyal Malaysians, like politicians Tony Pua and Rafizi Ramli, and the journalists at The Edge, are now being harassed and, indeed, wrongly persecuted for revealing to the public the alleged wrongdoings and the apparent rot that is 1MDB.
Aliran – and indeed Malaysians – cannot, must not, stand by in silence while our representatives in parliament and our voices in the media are harassed and threatened by a vicious state that evidently wishes to silence their voices and cover up what can no longer remain silent.
Now, MPs Tony Pua and Rafizi Ramli, together with the owner of the Edge Media Group, Tong Kooi Ong, have had travel restrictions imposed on them.

Brave journalist, Ho Kay Tat, is being investigated by the police under Section 124 of the Penal Code. Wild allegations of conspiring to overthrow the government are being levelled.
In contrast, a couple of those implicated in the 1MDB debacle – and who are now ‘wanted’ by the authorities – have apparently left the country (without any travel ban?).
But the elephant in the room – 1MDB and the allegations of abuse of the people’s hard-earned money – is really what should be addressed, examined, dissected, and exposed. There really is nowhere to hide anymore.
Silly video confessions, clearly made by creatures with little credibility, will not do. Intimidation, harassment and persecution of individuals and organisations that have worked hard to unearth possible wrongdoing will only anger Malaysians.
Repressive measures, such as denying these individuals their ability to move, indeed their liberty, do not speak well of a regime that boasts of being democratic but practises the opposite.
Aliran’s stand is that this is clearly not the way a democratic government operates. If indeed the allegations are false, then use the courts of justice to prove them wrong.
The whistleblowers have provided evidence. If you do not wish to thank them for doing so, counter them with evidence instead of tyranny.
