Aliran condemns death threats against Bersih leaders

Aliran condemns the IS-style death threats against Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah and her three sons as well as against former Bersih co-chair Dato’ Ambiga Sreenevasan and Bersih secretariat manager Mandeep Singh.

These threats are abhorrent. There is no place for violence in Malaysian politics. Bersih 2.0 in its current Bersih 5 campaign has ensured decorum, order and non-retaliation in all its events and activities. This is despite the unwarranted and often violent intimidation carried out by those who oppose Bersih 5 as occurred in Sabah Bernam and Sungai Besar.

Malaysians ought to be proud of what Bersih is trying to achieve in calling for a clean government, fair elections, the strengthening of parliamentary democracy, the empowerment of Sabah and Sarawak, and the right to dissent.

Aliran urges the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Comission to begin thorough investigations immediately. The perpetrators of these death threats should be brought to justice. Judging from past cases, the authorities should have the technological capacity to trace the origins of these threats.

We cannot and must not allow such base and barbaric actions to cow us and make us fearful. Instead we call upon all Malaysians to condemn and reject such despicable actions.

In fact, Aliran urges all peace-loving citizens who value justice and democracy to show their support for Maria, Ambiga, Mandeep and Bersih 2.0. We pray for their protection and wellbeing during this trying period.

Show your solidarity and support for these leaders who are standing up for justice on behalf of the nation by turning up on 19 November. In doing so, we will be standing up in solidarity with them and sending a strong signal that Malaysians will not tolerate such intimidation and that we are in unison in demanding good governance and free and fair elections.
