Aliran is gravely concerned about the tension caused by the socks controversy implicating the KK Super Mart chain of convenience shops.

Although we empathise with the pain experienced by many Muslims in the nation due to the perceived sacrilegious act, we are concerned that certain reactions to this incident could escalate and create dangerous divisions along ethnic and religious lines.

The problem started when 14 pairs of socks with the revered word Allah on them were apparently put up for sale at certain outlets, angering many Muslims.

It is appreciated that the management of KK Super Mart has apologised for this unfortunate incident.

But this has not appeased certain quarters, particularly those who are after its scalp.

Tempers flared on social media with postings calling for harsher punishment, such as a boycott of the chain, and even using expressions that we fear could lead to physical harm.

It does not help that certain politicians are using this issue as a convenient tool to gain political advantage, exploiting the volatile mix of race and religion surrounding it.

Note that those stoking and inciting hatred include politicians from within the “unity government”. These irresponsible members must be reined in by their party leaders swiftly.

The emergence of vigilantism is also deeply troubling. Certain individuals claiming to defend the sanctity of Islam have taken the law into their own hands. A number of irate men even harassed and intimidated those they felt had made objectionable remarks. If left uncontrolled, this phenomenon could lead to chaos.

We urge the government to take immediate and decisive action to quell the growing anxiety and uncontrolled anger, for the sake of national unity and security.
